'Sergeant Charles Herbert TURNER is brought under notice for conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty during the intense bombardment by the enemy on the night of 6th February, 1917. He was in charge of three Lewis machine gun posts to the right of GOODWIN'S POST, near GUEUDECOURT. These posts were approximately 50 yards apart and were not connected by trenches. Repeatedly when the bombardment was intense, he went overland from post to post to ensure that his men and guns were in action. When one of his posts was blown out and the personnel of the gun team were all casualties he quickly organised another section and established another post. Under intense shell fire he rescued several men who were buried and brought in across the open, to cover, several wounded men. Throughout the night his N.C.O. set a splendid example in coolness, resource, and bravery. He is strongly recommended for high distinction.'
