Military Medal 'This man is a Company Runner. He is brought to notice for the good work done by him on the morning of the 11th April 1917 when the attack was made on the HINDENBURG Line in front of REINCOURT. He was the first Runner who succeeded in getting back from the line to Battalion Headquarters with the information concerning the capture of the First Objective. This in itself was a great exploit as he had to cross over about a thousand yards of open country swept by Machine Gun fire. He was told by me that he need not return to the line; he nevertheless returned for the reason, as he explained to a comrade before doing so, that he would not like his Company Commander to think that he had got "cold footed on it". Having returned to the line he fought with great gallantry and assisted in repulsing several German bomb attacks. He was subsequently wounded when returning to our trenches. For his great bravery and exceptional devotion to duty he is strongly recommended for distinction.'
