'At Anzac on October 11th, 1915, he (then Private) went out with a reconnoitreing party to [a] crater in front of Johnston's Jolly, believing it to be full of Turks. For this act Pte Turner was complimented in Army Corps Orders of date about 15th to the 23rd October, 1915. At Anzac on the 29th October, 1915, after we had exploded a mine under crater Johnston's Jolly, two officers (Lieuts Bowra and Thoms) of 4th Australian Engineers and three men were overpowered by fumes and killed. In the attempted rescue work No. 703 L/Cpl Turner went down the gassed sap and although himself badly gassed succeeded in bringing out one body. Turner was in "C" Company 22nd Battalion at the time. Since going into [the] trenches in France Sgt Turner has performed his work daily under shell fire with the greatest coolness and courage, setting a splendid example to his men.'
