War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 9 May 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, 26 December 1915 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Transferred to 4th Divisional Artillery, 5 May 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 1 August 1916. Marched out from Australian Army Training Depot, Park House, to Winchester, England, 10 September 1916; marched into Training Depot, Park House, from Winchester, 2 October 1916. Transferred to 21st Field Artillery Brigade, Boyton (116th Howitzer Battery), 26 October 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 20 March 1917; taken on strength, 1st Field Artillery Brigade, 30 March 1917, and posted to 101st Howitzer Battery. Killed in action, 21 July 1917. Statement, Red Cross File, 25878 Bombardier S.P. HALL, 102nd Howitzer Battery, 1 September 1917: 'I had the following from a Driver in the 101st Howitzer, who saw what is related but whose name I do not know. It was near Zillebeke on the right of Ypres on July 21st. He said Uhlmann was wounded in the arm. The Doctor of No. 1 Bde, Bombr. E. Barrs and Gnr. N. Salisbury went to his assitance. Another shell fell almost in the same spot and killed ther four. The matter was known to many and full details can be got from the Bty. Uhlmann was a Sgt. His people have a farm near Bribane. He came from Egypt in the Corsican in March 1916. He was in the 116th How. Bty. but had been transferred to the 101st on March 22 1917.' Second statement, 5731 Pte J. WESTLAKE, 101st Howitzer Battery (Patient, 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartyford), 9 October 1917: 'He was a Sgt. I am in same Unit and he was Sgt. of my Sub section C. I saw him killed by shell when he was being attended to for a "Blighty" by Dr. Aspinall. Pte W. Salisbury, Bombdr Barrs were killed by same shell. Uhlmann was buried at Reninghelst Cemetery just outside the gate. Was present at the burial, service read by Chaplain Rodenknight of 2nd Bgde.
