War service: enlisted at Casula, New South Wales. Embarked from Sydney, 5 July 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 31 August 1916, and marched in to 5th Training Bn, Rollestone. Promoted Acting Corporal, 1 September 1916.

Proceeded overseas to France, 21 October 1916; taken on strength, 1st Bn, 10 November 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal, 10 December 1916; Temporary Corporal, 9 April 1917; Corporal, 10 July 1917.

Transferred to 1st Training Bn, 18 July 1917, and placed on supernumerary list. Marched in to 1st Training Bn, Durrington, England, 20 July 1917. On detachment to School of Musketry, Tidworth, 15 August 1917; rejoined 1st Training Bn, 15 September 1917, having qualified as 1st Class.

Proceeded overseas to France, 31 December 1917; rejoined unit, 5 January 1918. Admitted to 39th General Hospital, Havre, 14 January 1918 (not yet diagnosed); discharged to Base Depot, 5 March 1918: total period of treatment: 56 days. Transferred to establishment of Australian Infantry Base Depot, Havre, 26 July 1918, and taken on strength of Headquarters. Promoted Temporary Sergeant, 26 July 1918. On leave to Paris, 13 September 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 13 September 1918. Promoted Temporary Company sergeant Major (Warrant Officer Class II), 4 October 1918.

Marched out to England for return to Australia, 21 April 1919; marched in to No. 2 Group, Sutton Veny, 22 April 1919; commenced return to Australia on board 'Denavan', 8 May 1919; arrived Sydney, 26 June 1919; discharged, 18 August 1919.

Appointment to 33rd NSW Bn relinquished, 14 December 1945; appointment terminated (discharged), 15 December 1945.
