'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in command of a raiding party. He was the first to jump into an enemy trench, shot two of the enemy, and sent back eight prisoners and a machine gun. He showed fine courage and first class leadership, and obtained valuable identifications, with only one slight casualty.'
