Wounded in action, 4 December 1916 (gun shot wound, left foot); admitted to 2nd General Hospital, Havre, 20 December 1916; transferred to England, 20 December 1916, and admitted to Willesden VAD Hospital, 21 December 1916; left foot amputated; admitted to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 5 July 1917; discharged on furlough, 10 July 1917, to report to No 2 co,mmand Depot, Weymouth, 24 July 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Ulysses', 10 September 1917; disembarked Melbourne, 13 November 1917, for onward overland travel to Sydney; discharged (medically unfit), 18 December 1917
