'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At a critical time, when his battery was under hostile shell fire, he displayed the greatest gallantry and initiative in assisting his battery commander to save guns and ammunition from a fire. During the whole of this time the ammunition was exploding, but he continued to work regardless of his own safety until the fire was extinguished.'
