'During the operations along the MENIN ROAD east of YPRES on 20th September he was in charge of a party engaged on the construction of a strong point at LONE HOUSE near POLYGON WOOD. He carried out his duties in a remarkably able and gallant manner and when his officer and another Corporal were hit he went out to try and assist them in the face of heavy shell fire. He set a splendid example of devotion to duty.'
