War service: Western Front Embarked Sydney, 8 November 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 10 January 1917, and marched into 12th Training Bn, Codford. Found guilty, 5 February 1917, of failing to appear at place ordered by C.O.; absent without leave from midnight, 22 January, to 8 pm, 4 February 1916: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 16 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France, 13 March 1917; taken on strength, 45th Bn, in the field, 6 April 1917. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 3 November 1917, on charge of when on Active Service, deserting His Majesty's Service; absent without leave from 4 pm, 9 October, to 9 am, 24 October 1917; found guilty; awarded 10 years' penal servitude, and forfeited pay of 10 years and 25 days; sentence suspended, 27 November 1917. Admitted to 13th Australian Field Ambulance, 4 February 1918 (bursitis); transferred to 54th Genera; Hospital, 5 February 1918; to England, 5 March 1918, and admitted to First Time Hospital, Clandon Park, Guildford (synovitis, right knee); transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 18 March 1918; discharged on furlough, 2 April 1918, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 16 April 1918.
