Military Medal 'This man showed great coolness and bravery under fire on the morning of the 11th April, 1917, during the attack on the HINDENBURG Line near REINCOURT. After arriving at the Second Objective, he got his gun on to the parados of the German Trench and remained there despite snipers and heavy Machine Gun fire. he was instrumental in dispersing some fifty German Reinforcements which were being brought up to assist the counter-attack at the time in progress against us. Before retiring he blew up his Lewis gun with a German bomb in order that it would not fall into the hands of the enemy. Though completely surrounded by the enemy he refused to surrender and fought his way back to our lines. He is recommended for distinction.'
