Military Medal 'This man during the operations at Villers-Bretonneux on the night of 24/25th April, 1918, undertook difficult patrol work locating enemy posts that were menacing our advance, and bringing back valuable information which was of utmost importance to his company. Later on in the operations, when no stretcher- bearers were left, he volunteered to act as a stretcher-bearer and in this capacity his work was of the highest order. He continually exposed himself to heavy machine-gun and shell fire in the execution of his duty. His courage and coolness set a fine example to all ranks.'

Wounded in action, 8 January 1917 (gun shot wound, thigh), and admitted to 38th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to Ambulance Train No 25, 9 January 1917, and admitted to 11th Stationary Hospital, Rouen; transferred to England, 17 January 1917, and admitted to 3rd Australian General Hospital, Brighton (gun shot wound, left hand and knee: severe); discharged on furlough, 20 March 1917, to report to No 4 Command Depot, Wareham, 4 April 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 3 May 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 25 May 1917. Found guilty, 3 September 1917, of while on Active Service, disobedience of Routine Order, viz. consuming Iron Rations: awarded forfeiture of 7 days' pay. Appointed Lance Corporal, 29 April 1918. Awarded Military Medal, 1 June 1918. On leave to United Kingdom, 2 July 1918; rejoined Bn from leave, 17 July 1918.
