Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He took charge of two machine gun teams when his officer was wounded, got his guns into position on the objective, and protected the infantry while they were consolidating. He also brought into action a captured enemy machine gun, which he used with great effect. He set a splendid example of coolness and determination to all.'
