War service: Egypt, Western Front Joined 54th Bn and reverted to the rank of Private, Tel el Kebir, 16 February 1916. Promoted Lance Corporal, 1 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Posted missing, 19-20 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 4 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19-20 July 1916' Note, Red Cross File No 2850404: 'No trace Germany. Cert by Capt. Mills. 10.10.19.' Statement, 4321 Pte J. THORPE, 54th Bn, 8 September 1917; '[T]he soldier referred to in your letter was "killed" on the night of July 19th, 1916, in the counter attack made on us by the Germans. I did not personally see him killed, though another soldier I knew personally well, and a friend of Walshe's, told me that he saw poor Walshe killed at once by a shell.'
