'On the night of the 22nd/23rd May his Company when being relieved, came under very heavy shell fire while in a sap, and has a number of casualties. Private Ward took a badly wounded man away to a shell hole and dressed him and remained with him under heavy shell fire until assistance was sent after the barrage had ceased.'
