'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When some of his officers became casualties in an attack, he took charge, and led their platoons to the attack in a courageous and efficient manner. When the line bec ame disorganized owing to casualties, he re-organized it by his personal example and the confidence and determination with which he handled his men.
