Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. A truck of ammunition close to a dressing station was set on fire, and several shells exploded, endangering the lives of the wounded and others. For ten minutes he continued to pour water on to the burning truck until severely wounded by an explosion. His prompt action undoubtedly saved many lives.'
