War service: Egypt, Western Front Field General Court Marshal, 6 January 1916: charge: (1) striking his Superior Officer, (2) using insubordinate language to his Superior Officer, (3) offering violence to his Superior Officer and (4) striking his Superior Officer); pleaded not guilty to 1st, 2nd and 3rd charges, but guilty of 4th charge; found guilty of 1st, 3rd and 4th charges, but not guilty of 2nd charge: sentenced to 2 years' Imprisonment with hard labour. Proceeded overseas from Alexandria, 30 May 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 5 June 1916. Field General Court Marshal, Etaples, 25 June 1916: charge: (1) being absent without leave, 6 June 1916, (2) drunkenness, (3) escaping from confinement and (4) offering violence to his Superior Officer: sentenced to 3 years' penal servitude. Admitted from Field Punishment Station and transferred to Rouen, 3 August 1916. Admitted to 12th General Hospital, while under arrest, Rouen, 7 August 1916 (not yet diagnosed); transferred to 18th General Hospital, Carniers, 11 August 1916 (slight venereal disease: total period of treatment, 18 days); discharged to Base, 30 August 1916. Marched in to 2nd Australian Division Base Depot, 31 August 1916; marched out to Prison, 12 September 1916.
