War service: served with the Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force, Rabaul; struck off strength of Bn, 20 January 1916, on proceeding to Australia on board SS 'Morinda' for discharge.

Embarked Sydney, 22 August 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 13 October 1916.

Proceeded overseas to France, 12 December 1916; taken on strength, 13th Bn, 19 December 1916.

Admitted to 4th Australian Division Dressing Station, 28 January 1917 (bronchitis); transferred to 4th Divisional Rest Station, 5 February 1917; rejoined unit, 5 February 1917.

Reported missing in action, 11 April 1917; subsequently reported a prisoner of war, captured Reincourt, wounded left arm; interred 23605 Soltau, Hanover.

Repatriated; arrived in England, 6 January 1919. Granted extension of leave from 8 January to 10 February 1919; further extension to 14 February 1919. Mached into No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 14 February 1919; to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 20 February 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board HMAT 'Plassy', 17 March 1919; disembarked Sydney, 30 April 1919; discharged, 10 June 1919.
