War service: Egypt, Western Front Admitted to Isolation Hospital Detention Barracks, Cairo, 22 December 1915 (venereal disease); discharged, 17 January 1916. Allotted to, and proceeded to join, 59th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 26 February 1916. Transferred to 60th Bn, and taken on strength, Tel el Kebir, 15 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Reported Missing, 19 July 1916. Now, 25 August 1916, reported 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. Note, Red Cross File No 2880606: 'No trace Germany[.] Cert. by Capt. Mills 10-10-19.' Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal Letter, Base Records to mother, 10 November 1920: 'It is noted you state you desire to have the Star of David incised [on the headstone] and I would advise that this is the customary emblem of the Jewish Faith. As the late soldier was a member of the Baptist Church it is thought you would prefer to have the Cross inscribed.' No reply recorded. |
