Military Medal 'At WESTHOEK on the night of 28th September, 1917, for great gallantry and devotion to duty. Corporal WAY was in charge of party of men detailed to report to Brigade Headquarters. A sudden hostile barrage fell on the party killing 4 and wounding 8. He collected the wounded and carried them to Aid Post and then went on with the remainder of his party and reported for duty. His coolness and brave example greatly inspired those under him.'

Though suffering acutely from his knee he went over with his Company in the attack and with great courage and determination reach his objective. When advancing he came into contact with a strong party of the enemy and with two men to help him, at once attacked them and drove them out of the trench. Throughout the showed great coolness, cheerfulness and courage under very critical conditions and his conduct acted as an inspiration to the men under his control.'
