Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was detailed with a party to construct communications to a captured position over marshy ground. In spite of heavy and continuous barrage fire, he accomplished his task with great skill in the most difficult circumstances. He did excellent work on many other occasions, and always set his men an inspiring example of coolness and contempt of danger.'
