'For gallant conduct and devotion to duty. On September 1918 when this Battalion advanced from Dog Trench against [the] enemy position and all the Company runners had become casualties, this N.C.O. volunteered to take a message back to Battalion H.Qrs. At the time the Company was under heavy machine gun and artillery fire and had suffered 40% casualties in an advance of about 200 yards. This N.C.O. got the message through and returned. He then rendered valuable assistance in getting the wounded back to Dog Trench. Throughout the operation this N.C.O. rendered invaluable service and by his cheerful manner and disregard of danger set a fine example to his men.'
