Statement, Red Cross File No 2900111, Colonel A.W. SHEPHERD, 8th Australian Field Ambulance, 19 December 1916: 'This N.C.O. was admitted to the ambulance on the night of the 28th (sic) July with numerous shrapnel wounds in backm legs and feet, he died at 2 a.m. on 21st July and was buried by his battalion at Sailly Cemetery, France.'
