War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 28 January 1916; disembarked Suez, 28 February 1916. Transferred to 58th Bn, and taken on strength, Ferry Post, 1 April 1916. Transferred to 59th Bn, and taken on strength, Ferry Post, 3 April 1916. Promoted Corporal, Hog's Back, 10 May 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Wounded in action, 20 July 1916 (gun shot wound, back and legs), and admitted to 8th Field Ambulance. Died of wounds, 21 July 1916. Statement, Red Cross File No 2900111, Colonel A.W. SHEPHERD, 8th Australian Field Ambulance, 19 December 1916: 'This N.C.O. was admitted to the ambulance on the night of the 28th (sic) July with numerous shrapnel wounds in backm legs and feet, he died at 2 a.m. on 21st July and was buried by his battalion at Sailly Cemetery, France.'
