Admitted to hospital on his arrival in England.

Proceeded to France. Wounded in action, Rouen, France, arm, thigh and foot, 22 September 1917. Transferred to England, 7 October 1917; admitted to Queen's Hospital, Birmingham, and had left arm amputated. Injuries to left thigh stated to be severe. Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 16 January 1918.

Returned to Australia with gun shot wound to right foot; discharged, 25 April 1918 (medically unfit).
