Military Medal 'With Private HUGHES, 26th Battalion (Attached 2nd Australian Division Signal Company) this soldier while acting as linesman on 20th September, 1917 at WESTHOEK RIDGE, exhibited great coolness, resource, and courage while laying a line through to the Forward Brigade Headquarters. Although they had to contend with great difficulities in the way of carrying heavy reels of wire through marshy ground, they carried on under heavy shellfire and laid and repaired their lines for many hours.'
