Military Medal 'At DEMICOURT on 9th April 1917 for his gallant conduct in going out under heavy rifle and machine gun fire to rescue No. 913 L/Cpl. BAYNE who was wounded in both legs and unable to walk, Pte. WHATMAN succeeded in reaching him and carried him 100 yards into safety.'
