'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at CLAPHAM JUNCTION on the MENIN ROAD near YPRES on 20th September, 1917. He carried stretchers under heavy shell fire refusing rest and quite regardless of danger until the front line had been cleared of wounded.'
