'This N.C.O. has, since the inauguration of the Ambulance in Australia, been a steady and most reliable soldier. His duty as a Transport Sergeant has on many occasions demanded his services in areas under heavy shell fire, carrying rations to advanced positions and evacuating wounded under the greatest difficulties. During the PASSCHENDAELE operations in October, 1917, this N.C.O. was in charge of the Horse Transport in the forward area. He worked unceasingly for several days with little sleep, and his untiring energies and devotion to duty was in no small way responsible for the efficient rationing of the personnel and the speedy evacuation of the wounded. He has always carried out his duties in a most praiseworthy manner.'
