Military Medal 'During the operations south of PASSCHENDAELE on 26th October, 1917 he was employed on the construction of a strong point at the most advanced point of our final objective. To reach the site the parties pased through heavy barrage fire and over three miles of almost impassible country. Whilst on the work, which was continuously bombarded with heavy calibre shells, this sapper took charge of a section of the constructional work and by his magnificent example of courage and devotion and self sacrifice he inspired his comrades with great confidence and so contributed in no small degree to the successful completion of a valuable defence work. When his officer was wounded he immediately volunteered to carry him back three miles through mud and shell fire.'
