Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When four officers of his company had become casualties, he took charge of the company, commanding it with skill and coolness throughout a very trying day. The example set by this N.C.O. to all under his command, under a harassing fire of artillery and machine guns, was of the highest order, and it was mainly through the steadfast courage of Sergeant White, and a few other N.C.O.'s that the troops on the semi-exposed flank of the brigade maintained the position intact.'
