Found guilty, Perham Downs Command Depot, 18 September 1916, of (1) overstaying leave from midnight, 31 August 1916, until 15 September 1916: awarded 15 days' detention: forfeited 30 days' pay.

Marched into Perham Downs Command Depot, 21 February 1917; marched out to Larkhill, 24 February 1917.

District General Court Martial, held at Larkhill, 19 March 1917, charge: absent without leave in that he at Perham Downs absented himself without leave from 19 October 1916, until apprehended at Twickenham by the Military Police on 17 February 1917: awarded 7 months' detention; total forfeiture of 355 days' pay.

Remaining portion of sentence (74 days) is remitted as from 16 July 1917; proceeded overseas to France under escort via Southampton, 16 July 1917; marched into 1st Australian Divisional Base Depot, Havre, 17 July 1917; proceeded to join unit, 29 July 1917; taken on strength of 1st Pioneer Bn, in the field, 1 August 1917.

Reported an illegal absentee, 5 November 1917; rejoined unit, 16 February 1918.

Field General Court Martial, held in the Field, 25 February 1918, charge: absenting himself without leave from 4:30 am, 13 October 1917, from camp area until apprehended by Military Police at Pont-a-Chilles at 7:30 pm, 11 February 1918, a period of 121 days 15 hours: awarded 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour.

Admitted to 5th Military Prison to undergo sentence of 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour, 31 March 1918; release to return to unit at the Front, remaining portion of sentence remitted as from 18 July 1918; rejoined unit, 28 July 1918.

Detached to 1st Divisional Train, 19 January 1919; rejoined Bn from detachment, 8 February 1919; proceeded on leave to the United Kingdom, 15 February 1919; rejoined Bn, 5 March 1919; marched out for return to Australia, 10 April 1919; marched out to England, 17 April 1919; marched into Overseas Training Brigade, Longbridge Deverill, 18 April 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Port Darwin', 12 June 1919; disembarked, Melbourne, 27 July 1919; discharged, Sydney, 20 August 1919.
