'On 7th/8th and 9th June, 1917, during the operations south of MESSINES for his gallant conduct and devotion to duty whilst taking part in the assault on the enemy's position. He rendered great assistance to his Officer, and was of exceptional value when his unit was on one occasion held up by machine gun fire. He set a splendid example to his comrades.'
