Embarked Alexandria on HT 'Hororata' and proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, 16 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 23 June 1916.

Reported wounded and missing, 19 July 1916 (gun shot wound); captured at Laventiou, 19 July 1916, and officially held as prisoner of war at Fleurbaix, 20 July 1916; transferred to detention in Gefangenenlager, 31 July 1916.

Embarked Calais for repatriation, 25 November 1918; reported to headquarters, 26 November 1918.

Found guilty at London, 24 January 1919, of being absent without leave, 10.00 am, 3 January, to 24 January 1919: fined 21 days' pay; forfeited total of 42 days' pay; marched into No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 25 January 1919.

Found guilty at Weymouth, 13 March 1919, of being absent without leave, 11.59pm, 28 February, to 9.00 pm, 12 March 1919: fined 20 days' pay; forfeited total of 32 days' pay; temporarily promoted to rank of 2nd Corporal, Tidworth, 1 May 1919; detached from camp staff upon expiration of leave and reversion of rank, 29 July 1919; marched into No 2 Group, Sutton Veny, and given honorary rank of 2nd Corporal, 29 July 1919; taken on strength of Furlough Depot, 8 January 1920, and granted leave subject to recall.

Commenced return to Australia on HT 'Friedrichsruh', 22 January 1920; disembarked Sydney, 12 March 1920, for onward travel to Brisbane. Discharged Brisbane, 12 December 1920.
