Military Medal 'As a member of a reconnoitring patrol consisting of 2 officers and 1 man on the night 10th/11th February 1918, he entered enemy territory situated East of BITTER WOOD in the BASSEVILLEBEEK Sector. When well within the enemy outpost line, the patrol temporarily lay concealed, and by the light of enemy flares saw a post with 3 men about 40 yards distant and a working party of about 50 some 200 yards distant. Another enemy party of 8 seen approaching, were permitted to come within a few feet, and were then ordered to "Hands up". Fire with revolvers was opened and a bomb thrown, resulting in 4 Germans being badly wounded, others slightly, and only one of the 8 getting clear away. The badly wounded were quickly searched and valuable identifications obtained. As enemy flares showed strong parties moving toward them, and a machine gun opened fire, the patrol recrossed enemy wire and returned across difficult ground without casualties.'
