Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack. He worked his Lewis gun on the enemy's side of a railway embankment and inflicted heavy casualties. All his team had been early killed or wounded, but, though wounded himself, he continued at his post, and covered the withdrawal of his company. Later, when his wounded had been dressed, he returned to the lines and used his gun to splendid effect during the remainder of the day. He did magnificent work.'
