Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 20 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 30 June 1916.

Admitted to 14th Field Ambulance, 24 August 1916 (cholecystitis); transferred to No 1 Casualty Clearing Station, 27 August 1916 (haemorroids); to 2nd Canadian Stationary Hospital, Outreau, 28 August 1916; to England on board HS 'Newhaven', 15 September 1916, and admitted to Northampton War Hospital, 16 September 1916 (cholcorystitis: severe); discharged on furlough, 31 March 1917, to report to No 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 14 April 1917.
