As a Lewis Gunner, by his selection of positions both in attack and in defence after objectives were gained he displayed great initiative and coolness and was responsible for many casualties infilcted on the enemy, as well as preventing them from putting up much resistance. He showed great endurance in carrying his gun a long distance in the attack and always answered every call made on him. His example inspired those associated with him.'
