'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in leading a fighting patrol to capture an enemy strong point. He was the first into the enemy trench, silenced a machine gun, and killed one of the team. Having completed the capture of the post, he made his way in daylight across open country, and obtained touch with troops on the flanks, apprising his company commander of the situation.'
