'At ZONNEBEKE on the 12th October 1917, Private WILLIAMS who was attached to 26th Battery showed exceptional courage and devotion to duty. During the operations carried out this day, the battery came under constant enemy shell fire, and on several occasions men were wounded and lying at the guns in exposed positions. Owing to the Operation being of a very important order the remainder of the gunners could not leave their posts to render first aid but the wounded were ably and promptly attended to and carried to safety by Private WILLIAMS who displayed an utter contempt for hostile fire and a total disregard for his personal safety. Owing to the large number of casualties inflicted, the work of Private WILLIAMS not only assisted to keep the Battery in action, but also set a splendid example to his comrades. This man has always done his duty in a particularly conscientious and capable manner and I have no hesitation in recommending him for award.'
