'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while in charge of a section of trench mortars during an enemy attack. He rendered great assistance to the defenc eby the manner in which he handled his guns, and ably covered the withdrawal of infantry until obliged to destroy his guns to prevent their falling into the hands of the enemy.'
