War service: Egypt, Gallipoli Proceeded from Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 12 April 1915. Appointed Company Sergeant Major, 26 April 1915. Wounded in action, 8 August 1915 (bullet wound, chest), and admitted to 4th Field Ambulance; transferred same day to Casualty Clearing Station. Transferred to HS 'Devanha'; died of wounds on board, 12 August 1915. Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal Wife wrote to Base Records, 18 August 1917: 'I am pleased to acknowledge receipt of your letter bearing date of 30/5/17 raising my late husband Coy. Sergent (sic) Major Thos. Williams 553, 15th Battn A.I.F. to the rank of Warrant Officer II Class. In my loneliness it will always be to me asource of pleasure and consolation to know that he has performed his duty in such a manner as earned for him the commendation and recommendation of his Superiors and that the spirit with which he had tried to serve his King and Country has been recognized in the proper quarter.' Letter same day: '[His personal possessions] would be an immense source of pleasure to me through their being associated with him in his last moments.' |
