Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 4 September 1915.

Admitted to 7th Field Ambulance, 23 November 1915 (not yet diagnosed), and transferred same day to 13th Casualty Clearing Station; to Mudros, 25 November 1915; to Malta, 4 December 1915, and admitted to St Paul's Hospital (jaundice). Transferred to All Saints' Convalescent Camp, 18 December 1915; embarked for Egypt, 4 January 1916; rejoined Bn, Tel el Kebir, 13 January 1916.

Transferred to 7th Brigade Machine Gun Company, 2 March 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 14 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 21 March 1916.

Promoted Farrier, 10 April 1916; Driver (Belgium), 15 September 1916.

Admitted to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station, 19 October 1916; transferred to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, 22 October 1916 (accidental injury, right knee joint: displaced cartilage: injury not sustained in the performance of military duty); to England, 24 October 1916, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, 25 October 1916. Discharged on furlough, 13 January 1917, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 29 January 1917.

Found guilty, Perham Downs, 31 January 1917, of being absent without leave from 3.30 pm, 29 January, to 4 pm, 30 January 1917: awarded 4 days' confined to camp, and forfeited 2 days' pay.

Marched into No 4 Command Depot, Wareham, 8 February 1917.

Awarded Gold Medal (Serbia), 15 February 1917, for distinguished service in the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force.

Transferred to 69th Bn, Wareham, 23 March 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Ulysses', 10 September 1917; disembarked Melboure, 13 November 1917, for overland travel to Brisbane; discharged, Brisbane, 20 December 1917.
