Proceeded overseas to France from England, 23 September 1916; taken on strength, 49th Bn, in the field, 16 October 1916.

Admitted to 140th Field Ambulance, 24 October 1916 (sprained ankle), and transferred to 41st Division Rest Station; discharged to duty, 27 October 1916.

Admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance, 15 November 1916 (rheumatism), and transferred to Corps Rest Station; rejoined unit (date not recorded).

Found guilty, 26 January 1917, of conduxct to the prejudice of good order and Military discipline, i.e. falling out from fatigue party without permission and failing to report back: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2 [other entries state Field Punishment No 1].

Admitted to 4th Australian Field Ambulance, 5 April 1917 (synovitis, right knee), and transferred to Ambulance Train No 3; admitted to 9th General Hospital, Rouen, 7 April 1917; transferred to England, 24 April 1917, and admitted to Military Hospital, Lewisham, 26 April 1917 (right knee joints: severe); transferred to No 2 Australian Auxiliary Hospital Southall, 30 May 1917; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 19 June 1917.

Admitted to No 1 Australian Auxiliary hospital, Harefield, 21 July 1917; discharged on furlough, 3 August 1917, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 17 August 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Suevic', 27 September 1917; discharged (medically unfit: rheumatism and Strabismus [eye problem], Brisbane, 3 January 1918.
