'On 3 October, 1918, at Beaurevoir, he had charge of two machine guns, and showed great gallantry. After getting his guns into action, he reconnoitred forward under heavy machine gun fire and gained valuable information as to the enemy position. While covering a slight withdrawal of the line, his gun crew became casualties, and he worked single handed until he found a fresh crew.'
