Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 26 March 1916. Wounded in action, France, 28 July 1916; admitted to 2nd Australian Field Ambulance, 29 July 1916 (bullet wound, head and left shoulder); transferred same day to 4th Casualty Clearing Station (gun shot wound, forehead and left arm); transferred by Ambulance Train No 26, 29 July 1916, and admitted to No 13 Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, 31 July 1916; discharged to duty, 21 August 1916; rejoined unit, 27 August 1916. Attached for rations and duty to 7th Field Company Engineers, Belgium, 7 October 1916. Transferred to Anzac Light railway, France, 31 March 1917; attachment ceased, 17 June 1917.
