Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At CORBIE on evening of 30th April, 1918, when Brigade Headquarters was being heavily shelled, the Wireless station dug out was destroyed by a shell, one sapper being wounded and buried. At great risk to himself Corporal WINFIELD left his dug out and with the assistance of another man cleared the debris from the wounded man and carried him to a place of safety. This entailed half an hourUs strenuous work in an exposed position under very heavy shell fire. Corporal WINFIELD who is the Brigade Bombing N.C.O. has always shown great zeal in the execution of his office and the greatest coolness and courage under the most trying circumstances. Corporal WINFIELD performed this act of gallantry on his own initiative and was not warned for the duty.'
