Military Medal 'Near CLERY-sur-SOMME on 31st August 1918, this soldier was responsible for excellent work during the advance. Previous to his Company jumping off, he advanced alone and made a valuable reconnaissance of the enemy's dispositions. Later in the day when his Company was consolidating, he observed a party of 8 germans advancing up a communication trench. He immediately dashed forward and single handed engaged them. Although severely shaken by the explosion of 7 or 8 grenades which the enemy flung at him, he stood his ground and bombed the party inflicting casualties on them and putting the remainder to flight. No further attempt to counter-attack was made. He displayed remarkable courage and devotion to duty and his gallant action inspired all.'
