'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in leading and directing his men during a critical and severe engagement. At one point, when our troops were being hard pressed, Sergeant Woodfield found a Hotchkiss gun idle, the team having been killed or wounded. With great promptness he brought this gun into action and fired with splendid results until the end of the engagement.'
