Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When a gap was made in the line by an enemy counter attack, he rushed forward, rallied a party of men,and filled and held the gasp under a heavy barrage. By his conduct in face of heavy opposition at a critical moment, and his courage and determination in the absence of officers, he inspired the men to hold on in a very difficult position.'
